The International Society for Transgenic Technologies (ISTT
https://www.transtechsociety.org ) recognizes and supports efforts to refine and reduce
animal use in research. However, we emphasize that model organisms remain
indispensable to both fundamental discovery-based science and pre-clinical research.
These organisms have enabled critical breakthroughs in genetics, development,
immunology, and disease biology—insights that would not have been possible using
human-focused approaches alone. Transgenic models, in particular, provide
unparalleled opportunities to dissect gene function in a whole-organism context. We
urge the NIH to maintain strong support for model organism research alongside its
priorities, to ensure continued scientific innovation and biomedical progress.
