The ISTT Prize is awarded to investigators who have made outstanding contributions to the field of transgenic technologies. The selection of Dr. Soriano as the 15th ISTT Prize winner was made by the ISTT Prize Committee, who agreed that the work of Dr. Soriano in the field of transgenesis, and his generosity in sharing ideas and reagents were essential for progress in the science of mouse genetic engineering. Dr. Soriano earned two Ph.D. degrees in biology and genetics from the University of Paris in 1982. He went on to postdoctoral work in the laboratories of Claude Nicolau and Rudolph Jaenisch. During his fellowship at MIT, he demonstrated that mouse embryos transfected with retroviruses developed into transgenic mice carrying insertional mutations in genes. From MIT he moved to the Baylor College of Medicine where he developed retroviral gene trap technology that led him to discover the ROSA26 locus. Gene targeting in the mouse ROSA26 locus by the research community has produced over 1000 new mouse models. Currently he works on cell signaling pathways that control cell fates in the developing mouse embryo at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His pioneering work and eagerness to share gene targeting reagents and ES cells with the research community contributed greatly to the establishment of transgenic technology as a field of endeavor.
