International Society for Transgenic Technologies

ISTT YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD

.

The International Society for Transgenic Technologies (ISTT), in collaboration with ingenious targeting laboratory, has established the ISTT YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD that will be given at the Transgenic Technology (TT) Meetings

.

Background

.

The ISTT Young Investigator Award recognizes outstanding achievements by a young scientist who will keep the field of transgenic technologies vibrant with new ideas and who has recently received his or her advanced professional degree.

Merits recognized by the ISTT Young Investigator Award committee to the Awarded Scientist
Feng Zhang

Feng Zhang

3rd ISTT Young Investigator Award (2014)

awarded to Feng Zhang at the TT2014 meeting, in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK

Feng Zhang’s recent outstanding work in the development of the CRISPR-Cas technology has set the pace in this highly competitive field. Among his many seminal contributions to CRISPR-Cas technology is the engineering of the RNA-guided nuclease Cas9 for use in editing the mammalian genome. This and his other recently published works have clearly impacted the field of transgenic technologies. Moreover, Zhang has encouraged transparency in the development of CRISPR-Cas technology and has made his work accessible for use by the broader scientific community.

Toru Takeo

Toru Takeo

2nd ISTT Young Investigator Award (2013)

awarded to Toru Takeo at the TT2013 meeting, in Guangzhou, China

The Award committee considered that Dr. Toru Takeo’s work represented a major improvement of mouse sperm cyropreservation and IVF techniques, thereby greatly facilitating the archiving and sharing of many mouse models produced by the transgenic community. Dr. Toru Takeo, working in Dr. Naomi Nakagata’s laboratory, at CARD-KU, in Kumamoto (Japan), described three major technical improvements for boosting the efficiency of mouse sperm cryopreservation and the subsequently required IVF technique. The three fundamental modifications he reported in his recent publications tackled all three important steps in sperm cryopreservation and IVF.

Xiao-Yang Zhao

Xiao-Yang Zhao

1st ISTT Young Investigator Award (2011)

awarded to Xiao-Yang Zhao at the TT2011 meeting, in Florida, USA

Dr. Xiao-Yang Zhao developed a system to generate induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that showed 100 fold improvement in efficiency over the control method. The Award Committee felt his research was exciting and has great potential to impact the field of animal transgenesis, through his impressive work and publications on induced-pluripotent stem cells (iPS). Dr. Zhao’s breakthrough research proved that iPS cells could be used to generate viable mice by tetraploid complementation.
