Arthur Burghes
Dr. Burghes grew up (or not) in London U.K. He obtained his B.Sc. at the University of Calgary, Alberta Canada. He then returned to London working at the Jerry Lewis Muscle Research Center at Hammersmith Hospital (which lies adjacent HM prison service of Wormwood Scrubs which he did not attended). Dr Burghes received his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1984. His first interest in spinal muscular atrophy occurred at this time. After his Ph.D. he moved to Toronto's Hopital for Sick Children working in Dr. Worton's laboratory in his postdoc on positional cloning of the dystrophin gene. In the fall of 1988 he started his laboratory at Ohio State and started working on spinal muscular atrophy. He has been involved in mapping, and characterization of the SMA gene as well as creating mice models of the disease. He is currently a Professor at the Ohio State University and is using the SMA mice for development of therapies for SMA.
