Welcome to Florida! Welcome to the TT2011 Meeting!

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The International Society for Transgenic Technologies (ISTT) is pleased to announce that our 10th Transgenic Technology (TT) meeting, TT2011, will be held in Florida, USA, on October 24-26, 2011, at the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort, at St Pete Beach, 30 minutes drive from Tampa Airport.

conference-logo.pngThe 2011 TT meeting visits the USA for the first time, after previous conferences that were organized in Barcelona (2005), Brisbane (2007), Toronto (2008) and Berlin (2010). This will be our 10th meeting, providing us a unique opportunity to celebrate this forum, which was pioneered by Johannes Wilbertz (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden) starting in 1999.  Since the inception of the ISTT in 2006, this meeting has been the main event promoted and sponsored by the ISTT.

Anyone interested in the process of generating a new genetically-modified animal or in the experiments that follow to determine the corresponding phenotype of such transgenic animals is welcome to attend this TT2011 meeting. All scientists, group leaders, postdoctoral researchers, facility managers, technicians and PhD students working directly or indirectly with genetically-modified animals are kindly invited to participate and contribute to this conference where we will discuss the latest technology developments, the newest applications and strategies in biology, biomedicine and biotechnology using transgenic animals. Also all companies and institutions with an interest in this field are kindly invited to participate.

The ISTT is not only focused in transgenic and knockout mice but its wide interest is in transgenic “animals”.  Therefore in Florida we will also enjoy learning from talks presented by experts using transgenic rats, fish, pigs sheep and chickens, among other animal species.  Important animal ethics and animal welfare issues will be also addressed. We will discuss the latest regulations and recommendations on the use of animals in experimentation that have been recently issued and apply mostly for Europe and the USA.

Most notably, at the TT2011, we will award the 8th ISTT Prize for outstanding contributions to the field of transgenic technologies. This year, we are proud to announce that the awarded scientist will be Prof. Ralph L. Brinster, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, a founder figure in our relatively young scientific field.  Past award winners include Francis A. Stewart, Brigid Hogan, Charles Babinet, Andras Nagy, Qi Zhou, Kenneth McCreath and Teruhiko Wakayama.

The TradeWinds Island Grand is a beautiful hotel resort with wonderful ambiance located at a prime location in St Pete Beach, a 30 minute drive from Tampa airport, on the West Coast of sunny Florida. You can walk right out of your hotel room into the mild waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Florida average temperatures in the Tampa area in October are between 20ºC/68ºF to 29ºC/84ºF thus we can reasonably expect to enjoy mostly sunny and very pleasant weather conditions. Therefore, in addition to attending this interesting TT2011 meeting, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to visit interesting places around and even spend time on the beach.

On behalf of the TT2011 Organizing Committee I invite you to attend to the TT2011 meeting. Registration will open in January 2011.

See you all in Florida!

Lluis Montoliu
President of the ISTT
